As all aware people know, this month is Black History Month. It’s a month of celebrating the accomplishments of all black Americans, yet I feel as though it is one of the most irrelevant holiday’s of all time. It’s a holiday constructed to get the black communities of America to shut their whining about being unrecognized in America’s public eye, but a month of recognition does not equate to years of genuine respect.
Morgan Freeman once stated, “the only way to end racism is to stop talking about it.” This month only continues racism. It divides the human race. Why can’t we just talk about the accomplishments of all people? I understand the history of racism and why my people love to put a great emphasis on their success, but wouldn’t it be better if we all could agree that we’re all human?
Nobody is winning. How surreal is it to be judged on your skin color? Really, how surreal is that? It would be ignorant to say that we’re all the same, but it would also be ignorant to say that we’re all too different to get along.
The problem that some people face with racism is that they(including myself) try to remain neutral, but it’s a problem when other people want to pick sides. How do you react? It’s just crazy. Problems range from verbal assault to physical brutality because of melanin or lack thereof. Give me a break!
